Moab Whitewater Rafting

Recently got a chance to return one of my favorite places in the world-- Moab, Utah.

Planned a 5 day road trip that included a 2 day, 25 mile float down the Colorado and some side-trips to Arches National Park, Muley Point, Natural Bridges, and some Anasazi ruins.

Couldn't have had a better trip-- the weather was perfect at around 90 and at 22,300 cfs, the river was about 4 times higher than normal for this time of year. This made for some fast moving water and super fun class III rapids. The river was moving so fast that we got to our campsite several hours faster than anticipated. This gave us a couple extra hours to do some hiking above our campsite at Onion Creek (see the images below).

If you're an experienced paddler and are interested in your own DIY rafting trip, I very highly recommend visiting Canyon Voyages in Moab. I can't imagine you'll find anyone in Moab friendlier or more helpful than Don (the owner) and the rest of the CV staff. They set us up with a fully outfitted 10.5' NRS raft. For the most fun on class II-III rapids outside of a kayak, I highly recommend this boat!

Frankie Manning

I don't know that I have ever met anyone with the charisma, talent, energy, and enthusiasm of Frankie Manning. Especially the energy. And for the opportunity to not only have met, but to have learned from Frankie Manning, I will be forever grateful.

About 11 years ago I was fortunate enough to have started taking swing dance lessons from Frankie Manning. For anyone who's unfamiliar, that is like learning hoops from M.J., driving from Michael Schumacher, hockey from Gretzky, acting from Daniel Day Lewis. You get the picture...

Frankie Manning was one of the original Lindy Hoppers, the originator of Lindy Hop aerials and probably the most influential choreographer of swing dance. Ever. He is an American icon, a phenomenal talent and generous teacher and will be missed dearly by many across the world.

Ever wanted to run away and join the circus? Neither did I. But since I was little I've always had dreams about flying. Put the two together and you get Trapeze School New York. In Santa Monica.

Recently went home to SoCal and visited some friends in Santa Monica. While there we got an opportunity to try trapeze. I have to admit--I was skeptical at first. I thought it would be a boring tourist trap. I couldn't have been more wrong. If you've ever been curious, here's your chance. TSNY was a blast! And the instructors were great.

P.S. If you're heading to Santa Monica, you should also check out the Camera Obscura at the Santa Monica Senior Center. It's free!

While in New Orleans last month, I met local artist Jack Wittenbrink. He creates beautiful, very intricate and delicate cut paper art and frames from found materials. I purchased one of his pieces (the one you see below), then ended up hanging out and chatting for a while, met his family and created a few portraits for them. ARNO

ARNO is a very easy place to visit and a very difficult place to leave. At least for me it is. And I feel very fortunate to be in a position to say this. It's not every day that I get work in an environment filled with such benevolent, dedicated and passionate people like Robin and Natalie from ARNO or Stacy and all the other amazing volunteers at Animal Rescue New Orleans.

Recently, I was lucky enough to be able to spend some time creating images for ARNO. With any luck, someone who's thinking about purchasing or adopting a pet will see one of these images and be motivated to pay ARNO a visit. And, hopefully, take home a new friend.

Believe it or not, despite the years that have passed since Katrina, the city of New Orleans and organizations like ARNO can still use help (very much so) recovering and rebuilding. Alien Landscapes

They're much closer than you think. As a matter of fact, they're as close as a 4 hour plane ride. Not only are they closer than you think, they usually come with a complimentary tan and a (not complimentary but unlimited) supply of Pina Coladas.

If you've ever been lucky enough to snorkel or dive in the Caribbean, you already know what I'm talking about. I was lucky enough to spend last week in Grand Cayman. Sipping Pina Coladas and looking at other-worldly, underwater alien landscapes.

To make a week-long, SCUBA, snorkel & Pina Colada filled story short, all I can say I'm hooked. Hooked on Pina Coladas. Hooked on 81 degree ocean water. Hooked on diving in trunks instead of lugging a ton of gear down to Shaw's Cove in a sweat lodge simulating 7mil wetsuit. Hooked on Calypso Grill. Hooked on creating images like the ones in this post.

I feel very lucky and hope that everyone who wants to, someday, gets a chance to get hooked as well!

I love big dumps!

I'll take them anywhere, but one of my favorite places for big dumps is Utah. I can never complain about 2' of powder falling on an 8-10' base. Especially when it happens right before a day of snowmobiling. That's what happened for us during our extended weekend trip into the mountains near Brian Head Utah. If you love the outdoors and have yet to visit Utah, I recommend putting it at the top of your list!

Spending the holidays on Sanibel Island in Florida.

Life is rough...

Living in AZ for the past year, after spending my entire life on the west coast, has given me an appreciation for any opportunity to swim in/see/smell/touch the ocean. One of my #1 priorities on this trip is to spend as much time in the ocean as possible. Apparently the locals aren't as eager to go swimming in the Gulf of Mexicoin the winter. They say it's, "too cold". They also say I'm, "crazy" for going in the water. I say they're crazy for thinking 73 is too cold! Where I come from, 73 degree ocean water is a luxury! And I guess for east coasters, the 5' waves that west coasters take for granted would be a luxury. So goes the East vs. West coast saga...

For a boy growing up in the 80's, there's probably no musical instrument more notorious and instantly recognizable than this one.

And there was probably no rock band more popular than the one this guitar was used in. At least that's the way I remember it. Sadly for me, by the time I was old enough to go to a Van Halen concert on my own, the Van Halen I idolized no longer existed. Fortunately for me (and millions of other fans) Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth were finally able to iron out their differences and share the stage again. After 20 years, the original Van Halen went on tour. This time I was old enough to go to the concert. And did!

Black Friday

I couldn't possibly imagine getting up at 4 in the morning to shop for anything. Especially after 12 hours of football, hor d'oeuvres, wine, games, stuffing, turkey, mashed potatoes, more wine, pie and ice cream. And more wine. That's why I slept in until about 9:30... That's not to say I didn't do any shopping today. I did. Online. Between T-day and 1 week after new years I generally avoid malls like the plague. That's not to say I can't still get sucked into the B.F. hype. So, here I am, spreading the B.F. hype. It's worth it, though. I got some great DVDs at Amazon.com today for about 5 bucks each! Here they are: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind--a great movie from one of the most creative minds in film making (Michel Gondry), Garden State--Breakfast Club for the 90's generation and Children of Men--the premise of the movie seemed a little obscure to me, but it still has some of the greatest cinematography of the past 10 years. So, there it is. Hopefully, if you're a fan of these movies you're reading this in time to get in on the B.F. mania.

The Greatest Mexican Outside of Mexico

Heading to SoCal this weekend for a some great Mexican food. I know it seems like a long way to travel just for great Mexican, but it's worth it! Del Agave in San Clemente (formerly known as Chato's) is probably my favorite Mexican restaurant outside of Mexico. I'm not a restaurant critic, so I'll spare you the flowery, elaborate review. I'll just simply say that this place has the greatest carne asada, tortilla soup and everything else I've ever had in SoCal or AZ. The awesome patio and warm, relaxing atmosphere are also a plus. Make that two big pluses. They don't have a website, but I found this this info and review on Yelp.

I also found this info on Yelp. It's one of the real reasons I'm heading to SoCal. (Jetting to OC for my favorite Mexican food would be nice. It's just not reality... Yet!) Some good friends of mine, Cha & Sarah, recently opened a new salon in San Clemente. One of the greatest things I can say about them is that every single person (there's dozens) that I've referred to them over the years loved them. And almost every one of those referrals is still a client of theirs. They truly are two of the most gracious and talented hair stylists in Southern California.

So, for all my SoCal clients and friends--next time you're up for some great Mexican or a phenomenal haircut, remember Del Agave and Sanctuary Salon & Spa in San Clemente.

Hero Awards

Coming this Saturday is a great opportunity to help save the lives of thousands of pets. Friends of Animal Care and Control is hosting the 2007 Hero Awards fundraiser at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge. The fundraiser will include live and silent auctions, a formal dinner and an award ceremony to recognize pets that have made a heroic impact on the lives of Maricopa County residents.

In Rainbows

This post has nothing to do with Skittles. Or leprechauns. Or photography. But it does at least have something to do with art. And an interesting experiment in the distribution of art. Radiohead, one of my favorite bands, has decided to make their latest recording available solely through their website. Fans have two options for obtaining a copy:

A. Via download , available immediately or

B. As a fairly expensive box set, available in December.

Here's the interesting part--fans can name their own price for the download! Seriously. It's yours, whether you're a struggling college student who can only afford to pay with your eternal gratitude or a wealthy multi-billionaire like myself or my protege Bill Gates, who can afford to donate $100,000 to the Radiohead retirement fund.

I wish I had something to say about the album, but I haven't had time to listen to it yet. What I can say is that this is a very interesting time for media and media distribution, whether it's music, movies or even commercial and editorial photography. It will be interesting to see where this will all stand ten years from now...

World's most prolific flasher

No, the world's most prolific flasher was not a perv in a tan trench coat. He was a scientist. In a lab coat.

Most people have no idea who he is but at the same time would instantly recognize his work. As a graduate student and later, teacher at MIT, Harold E. Edgerton pioneered technology that probably every adult you know has used many times in their life. And many adults who drive the 101 through Scottsdale have grown to resent.

If it weren't for his advances we'd all have a very hard time taking pictures of our friend's boozy renditions of Sweet Caroline in dark karaoke bars. And life would not be complete without images to document those moments. So now you know who to thank.

Edgerton is universally recognized as the person responsible for developing flash (or strobe) photographic technology. He's also widely revered as an artist as well as a scientist. That is why you will find his work in galleries all over the world as well as the Scottsdale MOCA. At least until December 30th, you will. That's when the Edgerton exhibit at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art ends. So hurry over to SMOCA to see a great exhibit by a historic man. But don't be in too much of a hurry or, thanks to Edgerton, you'll probably get your picture taken by a Scottsdale traffic cam.

Drummond Island

Recently had an awesome 4 day vacation on Drummond Island, Michigan. It was my first time visiting the upper peninsula of Michigan and I certainly hope it's not my last. Drummond Island is a very beautiful, peaceful and relaxing place to spend a few days. It's also pretty densely wooded and home to a pretty wide variety of wildlife- bears, moose, wolves, owls, bobcats. In addition to the wildlife the island hosted a sweet Newfie named Maya--who liked to simply stand still in the lake, meditating for 20 minute stretches, an inspirational, peanut snatching squirrel that we nicknamed Twitch (because of his broken hand that kept shaking) and a photographer from Scottsdale who had too much fun getting "lost" on the back roads of the island in an AWD Subaru Outback. If you like boating, fishing, off-roading, snowmobiling, watching wildlife, relaxing on the beach, feeding handicapped squirrels, or all of the above, I highly recommend Drummond Island.

It's been a very busy month--lots of new clients, one trip to Seattle, two trips two Michigan, one trip to Sedona and one to the emergency room! If I had to choose a highlight, Sedona would definitely be a top contender. Even though I've been there 5 times in the past 10 months, I could very easily have visited twice as many times. I've been very fortunate to have visited some phenomenal parks all over the west--Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Arches, Big Sur, Olympic, Zion, Gallatin, Garibaldi Provincial... Despite such tough competition, Sedona definitely gets a spot at the top of that list.

Near the top of my list of places to stay in Sedona is Enchantment Resort. With the exception of their restaurants, everything at Enchantment--the setting and views, world-class spa, tennis, hiking trails, rooms, and other recreation options--is amazing. For dining, I can't recommend Dahl & Diluca highly enough. It's probably one of my favorite Italian restaurants anywhere. Sedona Sweet Arts is the best place to go for breakfast pastries and blended chai (or a latte for the coffee drinkers). Some other favorites in Sedona are Slide Rock and Grasshopper Point for swimming and cliff jumping, Airport Mesa for the view and Schnebly Hill Road for those who want to create a DIY Jeep tour. I have yet to stay there, but a friend has told me that Sky Ranch Lodge is a great place to stay if you're traveling with your pooch.

Seattle

Seattle was awesome as usual! It was nice to have a few days to visit family and tour around the city after the wedding. I only wish I had more than 3 days in Seattle. At least I was finally able to do something I've wanted, but have been unable, to do the past 4 times I was in town--see the Seattle Central Library. One thing I must say about the library is that it's one of the most unique and wildest looking buildings, library or otherwise, I've ever been in. I'm not even going to try to elaborate with words. I'll just share a few snapshots instead... It's definitely a must see if you're ever in Seattle. Two other things I highly recommend are taking a downtown ferry to one of the islands and catching a ferry back at sunset, the other is visiting Kerry Park on Queen Anne. Both will reward you with the two best views of the city. One last recommendation is the new SAM Olympic Sculpture Park...

Sparky Emerson & Maggie

Sometimes you meet a dog that has an amazing personality. A dog with an affectionate and playful temperament. A dog that loves being around people as much as other dogs. Recently, I was lucky enough to meet two dogs with absolutely amazing personalities. Sparky Emerson and Maggie are two dogs with huge hearts and equally big personalities. I feel very fortunate to have been asked to create portraits of these two characters. Sparky and Maggie are some of the sweetest, most well behaved dogs I have ever met. I enjoyed creating portraits of them so much that I didn't want to leave when we were done! I could have easily stayed around all afternoon playing with these two.

One of the greatest things about Sparky and Maggie is that they're both rescues. I especially love meeting awesome pets that come from shelters. The more people adopt amazing pets, the more opportunities others will have to meet amazing rescue animals, the more other people meet amazing rescue animals, the more likely they will be to adopt one for themselves, right? I sure hope so! I hope everyone gets a chance to come across two dogs as great as Maggie and Sparky Emerson. If you'd like a chance to meet and adopt an awesome dog you should check out the boxer rescue that Sparky came from.

18 foot bridge trolls...

...do exist. Seriously! Well, at least one does. You can find him residing under the Aurora Bridge in Seattle, Washington. That's where I'll be heading on Friday for a wedding (Seattle, not the bridge). You can see the troll below in a snapshot I took the last time I was in Seattle. In addition to having the most unique public art I've ever seen under a bridge, one of the most distinct skylines in the world and the most notorious flying fish in the country, Seattle has an almost endless amount of attractions for every type of traveler. If you plan on visiting Seattle, which I very highly recommend as it is one of my all-time favorite cities, and would like to see the troll for yourself I suggest looking here for more info.

I'll be in Seattle until next Wednesday, then I'm immediately off to the troll-free Grand Canyon until Monday, the 20th. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and hope that I come back with at least a few good pics for the blog!

Not really me, but one of the adorable, adoptable, pets in these pictures. They'd all love to have a new home. If you're interested, you can find them at the Maricopa East Valley Animal Shelter That's where I took these pictures this morning. The shelter can always use some help taking care of the animals. Anyone interested in volunteering should read my 6/26/07 blog post for more info.

I will be posting pictures of available pets on a regular basis. It's my hope that these pictures will help dispel the common belief that the only pets available at county animal shelters are the mangy, sick, poorly behaved ones that no one wants. On the contrary, the county shelter has many, many adorable, healthy, loving, well-behaved pets--the kind that everybody wants. All they need is a new home.

New Jr. Mascot part II

Now for the story behind the mystery pooch...

Last week as I was leaving an outdoor portrait session at a local park I spotted this little guy running up the street. To make a very long story short, he turned out to be abandoned. I can't imagine how or why someone could ever abandon any pet, let alone one as well behaved and adorable as this little guy. As it turns out, this happens all too often in the valley.

The Maricopa County East Valley animal control center receives about 100-150 amazing pets like this guy every day. Yes, every day! They are able to adopt out about 30-50 per day. Some of the rest are rescued by outside non-profit animal welfare organizations like the AZ Humane Society or Maddie's Projects. Despite its capacity with over 400 kennels, the county shelter can hold only so many animals. Unfortunately and sadly, those that can not be adopted or rescued get euthanized.

Enough sad statistics, let's get back to our buddy. I was hoping to get a return call from the dog's owner (he was micro-chipped) and avoid taking him to the county shelter. Also, I had another portrait session that same day, so I left him at my home with some food and water until I could take him to the shelter. After finishing the portrait session I went home and couldn't resist taking a few pictures of the pooch before taking him to the shelter.

It's when I went to the shelter that I learned a few of the sad statistics that I've just shared with you. That's what inspired me to do what I can to help increase the number of pet adoptions in the valley. As of this morning I am going to start photographing adoptable pets for the county shelter. When I do you will be able to see the images here, in my blog, as well as on the county shelter website.

I'm sure that you're probably wondering what happened to our little buddy. I'm glad to say that as of yesterday, he has a new home! If you are looking for a new friend like this guy, or even a feline friend, please visit one of the Maricopa County shelters. I promise you that there is no shortage of adorable, loving pets that could use a new home. Those who are interested in volunteering at any of the county shelters can contact the volunteer coordinator--Erin-- at erinmaupin@mail.maricopa.gov.

New Jr. mascot

The journal was feeling a bit neglected so I thought I'd pay it a visit this month! It can be a bit tough to keep journal without a 7th grade English teacher prodding me to do it. Anyone know a strict 7th grade English teacher who can help me?! At least I can say the absence is with good reason--the response to the new promotions has been overwhelming! Hopefully, if days become 24 hours and 15 minutes long for the next couple weeks, I'll have time to post some recent work in here. Until then I'll leave you with this:

Anthony Photography acquired an adorable new Jr. mascot pooch this week. Well, at least for a day. There's a pretty interesting story that comes with this mascot. More on him later... Until then, you can find a few more images of him in the PETS section of the Anthony Photography website.

Is the birthplace of deep-dish pizza, home of Wrigley Field, the "almost" tallest building in the world and Al Capone (and Geraldo Rivera's ill-fated attempt to uncover his "secret vault")--the one and only Chicago! I was recently fortunate enough to spend 9 days in the windy city. To make a long story short, 9 days wasn't enough. I can't wait to go back!
